From Chile to Tiananmen Square to Bernstein’s famous performance in Berlin following the fall of the Berlin Wall, Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” is both a protest anthem and a celebration of the human spirit. In a concert for the ages, Kahane conducts LACO’s first-ever performance of Beethoven’s inspiring “Choral” Symphony with the Los Angeles Master Chorale.

Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis is inarguably one of the top five pillars of the orchestral and choral repertoire and has become a specialty of the LA Master Chorale. At the end of his career – completely deaf at the time – Beethoven was on a prolific roll, premiering both his 9th Symphony and the Missa Solemnis in the same year. Audiences had heard nothing like it before – not only did he create a new musical language for himself, he also set the bar for an entire era of Romantic composers who had to wrestle with the weight of his achievements.

Artist-in-Residence Eric Whitacre guest conducts a performance of the most sublime Christmas choral music in the world. Audiences will recognize the familiar medieval carol In dulci jubilo (In sweet rejoicing), woven throughout the program – from Renaissance and Baroque madrigals to modern-day motets. Closing your eyes, you may even imagine yourself inside a candlelit cathedral as the purity of voices from the LA Master Chorale rise from the stage of Walt Disney Concert Hall.
